This movie shows the optimization history for a 777-like configuration, where maximum takeoff weight is minimized. Multi-point optimizations with 5 cruise conditions and 2 maneuver conditions are performed with a 2 million cell CFD mesh and 300 000 DOF structural mesh. The optimum with respect to 476 design variables (including aerodynamic shape and structural sizing) is obtained within 36 hours of wall time on 435 processors. The orange on top of the wing is the shock wave surface. More details can be found in this paper1.
